Ted- As you can see, we finally finished the basement. As you may recall, we had a flood and everything had to be boxed up and moved so they could take out the sheetrock and the old wall to wall carpet that was covered in 2” of water. Everything is now back in order and we laid your carpet tiles last weekend. It was so easy, even cutting them to fit perfectly. It is lovely to walk on and just really dresses up the whole room. There is a “media” section, a pool table area and a grandchildren’s play area, all looking very spiffy thanks to you. This is the Legato Touch style, Tradewinds color. Thank you for all your help! Hi Ted, I'm confident I'll be happy with the carpet - I'm a repeat customer! I bought from you around 2 years ago for our basement game room. We flooded during hurricane Irene last week - and the carpet I bought from you held up exceptionally very well. The tiles floated out of place, but after I dried them for a day or two in the sun, it was easy enough to figure out how all the pieces fit back together (we have a slightly complex design using block, stripe and texture tiles). Ted - thanks for keeping my carpet squares in supply. The last box I ordered I decided to give to my college student to take with him to school. they should be great for a dorm room. the area rugs we used to use, from target, are impossible to clean and are a bother to store. the reason I need new squares for my own home is that i have a terrier who still wees in the house. I cannot get the urine smell out of any carpet so I just replace them. they are otherwise perfect in every way. As my dog is only 6, and may live to be 15, I should continue to be a loyal customer for many years to come. Cheers Priscilla

Great, Thank you Ted. The only other thing that concerns me, is how well the tiles stay down on a cement basement floor. I am worried about the vacuum cleaner pulling them up or people's shoes catching the edges and flipping them up. I realize that because you sell them, you're obligated to push the good points, but I just don't see the tiles staying down very well. Perhaps I am just skeptical, but do they really stay anchored that well to the cement floor? Even over long periods of time (years of wear?) Because the tiles are actually more expensive than wall to wall carpeting, I want to make sure they look good and do their job should I decide to go this route. I like the fact that should they get wet, I can just remove a small area and replace, so the tiles seem like a good option in theory. I just worry about how they will stay down compared to glue down squares. Thanks, ~Eric~
Hi Eric! I don't blame you for being cautious. I've been selling and installing Milliken carpet for about twenty years and I haven't had any issues with the carpet coming up during vacuuming or even extraction cleaning. In fact the TractionBack adhesive is not intended to "stick" the carpet to the floor. It is intended primarily for keeping the carpet from shifting laterally. Milliken makes an extremely stable carpet tile and it's natural tendency is to remain firm on the floor. I hope this helps. Thanks again for your interest! ted

Ted, The carpet laying was the easiest part! In the before picture, the brown on the floor is flood mud – took me 5 days to get it clean enough to work with – was like scraping off chewed up tootsie rolls. I think the stairs turned out great, and you are right about the edging helping with traction. I used carpet tape over uneven areas and heavily on the stairs. We’ve had some tiles become loose at the edges, and some were “tackier” than others – but a little tape here and there and no worries! Now my dad has a new man cave that is much improved over the 60’s basement that was there (even before the flood). Thanks again for all of your help – you were awesome to work with! Denise

We just installed the Legato Touch at my friends house yesterday and it was so easy and looks fantastic. Now I'm excited about doing my own house. I really would like to see a sample of each of the textures. I requested samples once before, but none of the colors I chose really worked for me. And I don't remember those samples having the low shag appearance. The low shag looks great at my friends house, but that's not really what I want. Ted, I wanted to check in about the return of the box of defective tiles as I haven’t heard back in a while on the FedEx pickup. I remembered you wanted some photos of the project so I have attached some. This project was approached a bit differently since there was a large amount of heavy office furniture and computer equipment that could not be removed from the room, so everything was shuffled around as the new carpet was laid out. The old carpet was cut away in 1-2 foot strips. The first three photos shows how I determined starting positions, the carpet needed placed so that it would end with a sufficiently large enough piece on the odd shaped wall edge the corner and the 2 carpet termination strips. Any square placed on a carpet strips needs to be at least 8-10 inches or it won’t stay down nicely. The 4th and 5th photos show the finished difficult side of the room. By using careful placement combined with the use of weighted bins to prevent some sliding it is possible to place the squares tight so that the separation line is nearly invisible. The last photo shows the finished opposite side of the room after placing most of the equipment and furniture back. Thanks, Dave

Hey Ted, Well, you guys were the price leader by a long way and your site appears totally legit, which is an unfortunate but very real internet concern, as I am sure you understand. I appreciate your response and look forward to receipt of the shipment. It will replace legato dawn shaving cream tiles which we loved, but which unfortunately Home Depot discontinued. We are buying 50% more than we need for the coverage because of our 3 dogs, so I really hope it works out, and I really hope Milliken does not discontinue the color or 19.7 x 19.7 in case our 50% overage is not enough. Hi, Ted, Thanks for your excellent follow-through on this shipment. Since you are being so helpful, could you give me some tips on how to avoid a lot of waste installing the tiles in two 3'-wide hallways (they adjoin in sort of an L-shape)? I realize you have an installation video, but it doesn't cover this kind of an area. If the tiles were 12" each, it would be no problem. However, with their odd size, this is going to require lots of cutting. A friend advised using a row of whole tiles down the middle of each hallway and then cutting pieces for the right and left sides. I suppose there is no way around this, is there? Phyllis

Hi, Ted. I am disappointed to learn I can't get the same product (Old style Legato). I really loved that carpet. It felt like regular, padded, wall to wall. Ah, well. Thank you for the video. That did help clarify the differences in the new products. I think the Touch is probably closest to what I had, but the colors are too limited. My previous carpet was a light grey and I need to stick with either that, or possibly a light green to match the rest of the room. Ted, I received my carpet tiles and I couldn't be happier! I am impressed with the quality and the ease of installation. The backing is just tacky enough to stick yet still easy to lift off the floor. I really wasn't expecting this kind of quality for the price. The delivery was much quicker than I expected as well. Dear Ted, You are a hero! Something happened to that package of carpet tiles and it was nothing to do with your end so I am sorry that you have been put to the trouble and expense. I was very, very frustrated yesterday after my fourth or fifth conversation with Fed Ex who finally just said there was nothing they could do. The missing package somehow was separated from the other three and delivered on a Friday evening according to the tracking. It was said to be delivered to the 'back door'. My brother's apartment building doesn't have a back door so we thought it was just delivered to a wrong address. But when I called to find it I was told that the driver had given it directly to my brother and I am very sure that didn't happen. Over the course of the next few calls, other stories were told, and I truly can't make any sense out of where or why that package has landed where it must be right now. Hi Ted, I completed the basement this past Friday. Yes, I installed it all by myself. Turned out really nice. I am glad I chose the colors "shaving cream" and "first cup". I took some before and after pics for you to post on your blog or whatever you choose. Hopefully, this will help the next potential customer get a visual as to how they can transfer their drab basement into something that is very eye catching. My husband noted that the basement looks bigger with the carpet checkerboard square design. As you can see, this room in the basement is very long and narrow. I will send the other pics in another email because I have too many. In a few months, I will need to order probably 4 more boxes of the same colors as we decided that we should just extend the carpet out to the hallway (which is the door you see in the middle going out). Ted, I am very pleased. Actually, the quality of the fibers on the tiles I got from you appears to be better than those I bought from Lowe's. Not sure why that is. I really like the First Cup color a lot. Because I had experience with this product before the installation went much faster this time. What took me 6 hours before took me about 4 hours this time and the space was bigger. I will get you measurements of the next area I am looking to do. I won't be able to get started on that until after we get our wall braced and the drywall back up. I'm thinking that will be closer to spring. Will keep you posted. Karen

I am atually going to order from you later today. I am looking at ordering 7 boxes to complete my sewing/craft room in our basement. I initially wanted to continue the color I used in my husbands office out into the hallway and through my craft area but have since decided that I am going to go with a darker color and am looking at "First Cup". Made it back home safe and sound. Glad to get away from the northern Illinois traffic (mainly Chicago). Had a good time with our 3 children and their families. Received the carpet tiles in good time. They came on Wed. when they were suppose to. By Thursday afternoon I had the boxes emptied. We just love them. They look really nice and so easy to install. Got some samples of the Fuse Line from local Lowe's to look at, and they would be OK, but have been leaning toward the Embrace style, with a little more pile. Loved the iPhone video on uTube! Anyway, Roll Call, Sailor's Warning and Arizona are the three colors I'm looking at mixing in the Embrace line. How long would it take to get samples to me? I'd like to get started on this part of my project ASAP.

Hi Ted, I finally finished my remodel and laid the carpet tiles. I really like them. Colors match perfectly. However, two of the #620 Block Casual Cream tiles are defective. There is a about a foot long line where the loop in the carpet is raised...it's hard to describe. I could try to send a digital photo. It may be too late to have two replacements sent out. If I have to, I can try to hide the defect under furniture, etc, so I am still quite happy with the result and will probably use these again in another room. Thanks so much!!! I have an idea for your website. When I was trying to design the layout I copied the square samples on the website and put them in a word document in different patterns - it would be a nice enhancement if you could have a way a client can copy and paste the colors and designs easily into a pre-shaped box that way they can see how their design would look. It was really tough doing it in a word document because the squares did all funny things with their shapes. Now that my boys are 6 & 7, they unfortunately spend more time kicking balls around the room than pushing their trucks around... The first thing they did once we had the room cleaned up was start playing soccer in that big open space! We used to have an old pool table there, but the only thing it was used for was storage. Ted, I installed the Fuse tiles in the basement and love them. The only issue we had was that the arrows on the backs of the tiles were not consistent in direction for the pattern between different boxes. Within one box it was OK, but when we moved on to the next box, it really threw us off...so we just disregarded them and put them down in the pattern we had started, rather than judging by the arrows. You may want to let people know. Anyway, the tiles are lovely and now I am consdering them for bedrooms. We do not have anything like this in Canada and the price is great and they are so easy to install you don't need to hire someone. Thanks.

Hi K, The Legato Carpet tile isn't really designed for the stairs. It doesn't work as well on the edge of the stair as broadloom carpet. You can purchase vinyl stair nosing and then install the carpet on the stairs and the risers. It's a little bit more expense and effort, but it looks very nice. (perhaps a bit of a commercial look) I hope this helps. ted

There wasn't any place on the order form to provide you with the date ranges I can accept delivery, so here is the info. Please arrange for delivery to take place during either of these 2-week periods: February 15-February 26 or March 8-March 19. If all else fails, it will have to be delivered after March 29, but it sounds like you'll be able to make it during one of these date ranges. I was hoping for a carpet tile that I would not have to glue down in case it would ever have to be replaced. I still have not made my decision yet as I am receiving carpet tiles from other dealerships as well but I like the quality of your samples instead of the Shaw that I have received with a plastic backing that has to be glued. If you could make any suggestions that would help me make a decision, I would appreciate it. I am installing this tile in a computer room on the lower level with concrete floors. Why I am using the tiles is because we have a safe in this room that cannot be easily moved and thought we could work around it. Also with a computer comes the computer chair with wheels which has ruined my current flooring. So...trying to decide what type of carpet would be the best is a tough decision. Ted, Thank you, the carpet tile came in on Thursday right on schedule. We are very excited to get started on the installation. I do have a question that I hope you can answer. We are installing the carpet tiles in the upstairs hallway and we chose to do two different color tiles which we planned to alternate for a checkerboard look. The concern is that the hallway is not wide enough for two tiles side by side so one of them will have to be trimmed. What I would like to know is will it matter if one tile is trimmed and the other is full size or if we should trim them both to keep them uniform? I hope that I have explained myself well enough. Any input that you can provide would be appreciated. R/

I think it's a great question. From strictly an installation point of
view, cutting one tile is no problem. Installing real small pieces of
tile sometimes requires a little extra adhesive (double stick tape). I think aesthetically you'll be more pleased if you trim the side of
each one and keep the pattern uniform. I know it's a little more work,
but I think you'll like the results. Good luck with your project!

I used to work in a department store in the floorcoverings department (a hundred years ago) and remember having to cut and give swatches to customers. I have a question...we assume we will be flooded again unfortunately, and would pull up the tiles as preparation for the rising tide. Do you recommend just keeping the backing paper to stack between the tiles, or has someone figured out a better trick (wax paper,....)?

Hi B, Good luck with your project this weekend! If you do pick up the tiles to prepare for flooding, you can stack them back to back, just as they're packaged. That will work just fine for the whole tiles. It's pretty difficult to save all of the cut tiles. You can number the backs and reassemble as they were originally installed. It's a little like assembling a jigsaw puzzle and it's hard to get it exactly as it was, but, with a lot of patience, it can be done. ted

Hi Ted- After all, ended up ordering 10 boxes of the Legato Embrace 915 Birch Bark. The Touch looked cushier, but the Embrace actually felt like it had more spring to it - probably because of the more dense and short pile. Since it'll be in a playroom and hallway it seemed like it would take less maintenance. Thanks for all of the info!

Hi Ted, Have been meaning to email you to thank you for such a quick response in sending the additional carpet samples. Unfortunately, my basement flooded again with the last heavy rain - this time it was not due to the subdivision behind me but rather damaged caused to the french drain (long story) - anyway, after another clean-up - have been waiting to see if the repairs have done the job. I am also in the process of taking the developer behind me to court - found and attorney that feels I have a good case (is even taking it on contingency) - so will be in touch when I am ready to install the carpet. We are still waiting for the insurance agent to arrive, ugh! We have put area rugs on the concrete while we sort out all the work and options.. walls, doors, floors... So sit tight, as quick as you were, seems we may not be as quick!
